Many times parents want to know that their child has a means to get cash if they need it or be able to buy something unexpected whenever they need too. That is why more and more parents are relying on secured credit cards. It is much easier for you to obtain a secured credit card and maintain it than it is a non-secured credit card. You can add to the secured credit card limit by simply adding more money to the bank account. Parents like this because it gives them better control to the spending limits of the student. It is a great way to teach your child how to budget and stick to it. Paying for things that they need is one thing but spending money on things that are not needed is another.

When a student has an unsecured credit card they can over spend and before you know it the credit card is maxed out. Then the student may apply and receive another credit card that they can use. Many times the student may use one credit card to pay the expenses on the first credit card. This usually becomes a major problem as the unsecured cards become even harder to maintain because of the payments, high interest, and annual fees attached. That is why it is suggested to parents that they obtain a secured credit card for their child when they go to college. The idea is to help both parent and student control spending.

When it comes to building credit for the first time, also look at the advantages of a student card because they both have their upsides and downsides. With a secured card, you may find that they have excessive fees while the other doesn’t have any fees. You’ll also find with a secured card that they don’t offer as many rewards.
